Nijjar murder Case: Canada Police Statement On Three Detained Accused, Here Are Key Points

Hardeep Singh Nijjar was fatally shot in Surrey, Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement, a claim dismissed by New Delhi as baseless.

  • Canadian authorities identified the suspects as Karanpreet Singh, 28, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karan Brar, 22.
  • Mandeep Mooker, an RCMP superintendent, stated in a televised briefing that they were exploring potential ties between the alleged assailants and the Indian government.
  • Assistant RCMP Commissioner David Teboul asserted the investigation’s continuity, suggesting the involvement of additional individuals in the murder.
  • The three who were apprehended in Edmonton, Alberta, and are reportedly Indian nationals residing in Canada on non-permanent resident permits.
  • Canadian police are in communication with their Indian counterparts regarding the case. Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy.
  • Teboul noted ongoing separate investigations, including the examination of possible links to the Indian government.

India and Canada’s relations deteriorated when Nijjar was named a terrorist by the country’s intelligence agency in 2020 and subsequent murder charges. Citing involvement in internal affairs, New Delhi retaliated by seeking the dismissal of 41 of the 62 Canadian diplomats. Even said, India insists that Canada never offered solid proof of Nijjar’s murder, and tensions have partly decreased since then.
