People will see the lower milk prices in India from September 22, following the government’s plan to remove the 5% GST on a few packaged milk products, and it is also expected that this move will help people who face difficulty due to the higher costs.

Some milk variants could save families between Rs 3 and Rs 4 per litre, making daily use more reasonable.

Why Milk Prices Are Falling?

The government’s move aims to make milk, a basic food item, more affordable for all families, and by removing the 5% GST, the burden on consumers will be reduced. Millions of people who rely on brands like Amul and Mother Dairy will directly benefit from this change.

Mother Dairy, Amul Milk – Expected Price Drop

After the GST exemption, milk prices may fall across different categories. Here are the likely price changes:

Buffalo Milk: From Rs 75 to Rs 71–72

Cow Milk: From Rs 58 to Rs 55–57

Mother Dairy Full Cream Milk: From Rs 69 to Rs 65–66

Mother Dairy Toned Milk: From Rs 57 to Rs 55–56

Mother Dairy Buffalo Milk: From Rs 74 to Rs 71

Mother Dairy Cow Milk: From Rs 59 to Rs 56–57

This drop will give direct savings to consumers, especially middle-class households that spend a significant part of their budget on milk and dairy products.

Mother Dairy, Amul Milk – When Will the New Rates Start?

The new GST-free prices will come into effect from September 22, 2025. From this date, the rates of packaged milk products, including those from Amul and Mother Dairy, will be revised in the market.

Only UHT Milk to Get Cheaper, Says Amul

However, not all types of milk will see a price cut. According to Amul, fresh pouch milk already had zero GST, so its prices will remain the same.

Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), clarified this point. He said, “There is no change in the prices of fresh pouch milk, as GST on it has always been zero.”

He further explained, “The government has reduced the GST on ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk from 5% to 0%, meaning only UHT milk will become cheaper starting September 22.”

This means that families who buy Amul’s UHT milk cartons will benefit from reduced prices, but regular pouch milk drinkers will not see any change.

What It Means for Consumers?

The GST cut is part of the government’s effort to tackle rising inflation and ensure affordable food essentials. While Amul has confirmed that only UHT milk will get cheaper, Mother Dairy’s rate card may show bigger cuts across different milk types.

Supermarkets and milk wholesalers will update their price lists after September 22 so that customers can see the expected costs.
