The Indian government has arranged rescue flights for citizens stuck in Nepal after unrest forced the closure of Kathmandu’s airport. Air India and IndiGo will operate additional flights to bring people home safely. Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed the plan on Wednesday, saying airlines have also been advised to keep fares “within reasonable levels.”
The move highlights India’s quick response to help its citizens abroad during emergencies, ensuring both safety and affordability for passengers.
Flights Resume From Kathmandu
The Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu reopened on Wednesday after being closed due to political unrest in Nepal. This closure left many Indians unable to return home.

“With the opening of the airport operation in Kathmandu, @MoCA_GoI, in coordination with Air India & IndiGo, has arranged additional flights this evening & over the next few days, alongside scheduled services resuming tomorrow,” Mr. Naidu posted on X.
Air India confirmed it is running special flights on Wednesday and Thursday between Delhi and Kathmandu to assist stranded passengers.
Airlines Asked To Keep Fares Affordable
The Civil Aviation Ministry also instructed airlines not to take advantage of the crisis by raising fares. The government wants all rescue flights to remain within “reasonable levels” so stranded people can afford their tickets.
This step comes after repeated complaints in similar situations where passengers faced high last-minute fares during emergencies.
Pattern of Quick Response
This is not the first time India has stepped in during a regional crisis. The government has previously conducted evacuation operations amid natural catastrophes, times of conflict, and unrest in nearby nations.

What Happens Next?
Air India and IndiGo will continue additional flights until the backlog of stranded passengers is cleared. Scheduled services will also return to normal as the airport stabilizes operations.
For many stranded Indians, this move comes as a major relief after days of uncertainty in Nepal’s capital. The government has urged citizens to remain calm and assured that everyone will be brought home safely.
