In a scathing attack on Wednesday, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) criticised opposition parties for their decision to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building. The NDA condemned the move as not only disrespectful but also a direct affront to the democratic ethos and constitutional values of the country.
Labelling the boycott as another instance of opposition parties’ disregard for democratic processes, the government expressed its disappointment. The NDA further accused the opposition parties of indulging in vote bank politics and corruption, asserting that their unity lacked a shared vision for national development. The NDA emphasised that such parties would never be able to fulfil the aspirations of the Indian people.
The list of opposition parties opting to boycott the inauguration includes Congress, AIUDF, DMK, Aam Aadmi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), Samajwadi Party, TMC, Janta Dal (United), Nationalist Congress Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), RJD, Indian Union Muslim League, National Conference, Communist Party of India, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Kerala Congress (Mani), Vidhuthalai Chirunthaigal Katchi, Rashtriya Lok Dal, Revolutionary Socialist Party, and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
In an official statement, the NDA declared, “We, the undersigned parties of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), unequivocally condemn the contemptuous decision of 19 political parties to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building scheduled for Sunday, 28th May. This act is not merely disrespectful; it is a blatant affront to the democratic ethos and constitutional values of our great nation.”
The NDA emphasised the significance of Parliament as a revered institution that serves as the beating heart of democracy and shapes the lives of citizens. They regarded the opposition’s disrespect towards this institution as indicative of intellectual bankruptcy and a disturbing contempt for democracy itself.
Citing a history of disruptive behaviour, the NDA targeted the opposition for frequently disregarding parliamentary procedures, staging walkouts during crucial legislations, and displaying a lackadaisical attitude toward their parliamentary duties. The NDA argued that this recent boycott was yet another instance of opposition parties showing disregard for democratic processes.
The NDA’s statement also called out the opposition parties for their perceived hypocrisy.
