Former Odisha Chief Minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik, 78, was hospitalised in SUM Ultimate Medicare hospital in Bhubaneswar on Sunday night following complaints of restlessness. Physicians subsequently established that the experience politician was dehydrated. His health has since been stated to be stable, and he is recovering well.
Restlessness at Home Resulted in Admission
Party sources say that Patnaik started complaining of illness late on Saturday night at his official residence, Naveen Niwas. A group of doctors was summoned immediately, who, after preliminary examinations, suggested hospitalization. He was hospitalized around 5:15 PM on Sunday, where experts initiated treatment for dehydration.
Whereas previous reports indicated age-related illnesses as the cause of his hospitalization, physicians have explained that dehydration was the direct reason. He is still kept under observation but is reported to be recovering progressively.
Recent Medical History
The BJD big shot had just come back after a long medical sojourn in Mumbai, where he had spinal surgery for cervical arthritis. The operation was conducted in late June after which he was prescribed several weeks of rest. He was released in early July and greeted with open arms by thousands of fans upon his return to Bhubaneswar mid-July.
In his recovery time, the routine running of the party was handled by top leaders of the BJD PAC. The system guaranteed continuity in party life during which Patnaik worked on restoring his health.
Odisha’s Longest-Serving Leader
Naveen Patnaik is India’s most prominent political leader, having held the office of Chief Minister of Odisha consecutively for 24 years from 2000 to 2024. Having quit the position after the 2024 Assembly elections, he became the Leader of the Opposition.
His term as chief minister was characterized by a public image of clean administration, efficient administration, and handling of disasters. Although he shifted to the opposition benches after that, Patnaik remains highly respected among the voters and within his party.
Political Consequences of His Health
Patnaik’s new hospitalization has again brought into focus the dilemma of living an active political life on the one hand and increasing age and health issues on the other. In the BJD, veteran leaders have assured party workers that the former chief minister is being given the best possible treatment and will soon resume active duties.
Witnesses point out that his absence, as short-lived as it may seem, puts more onus on the Political Affairs Committee and other senior members to guide the party’s organisational and legislative strategy. With Odisha slated to witness crucial political landmarks in the months ahead, the health of the veteran leader will be closely monitored.
Outlook Ahead
While Naveen Patnaik continues to be under the supervision of doctors, his recovery is being seen with optimism by doctors. Party leaders and supporters have been confident that he would become fit enough to get back to work soon. For Odisha politics, his presence continues to be vital — as a beacon of hope for the BJD and as a strong voice for Odisha’s opposition.
The next few days will be crucial to know the timeline of his active return to politics. Meanwhile, his fans in Odisha are waiting for optimistic reports regarding his health and recovery.
