National capital is on high alert, as Yamuna flows above danger mark

The National Capital has been witnessing heavy downpours since Saturday, causing waterlogging and traffic congestion in different parts of the city. Not only this, but the Yamuna River crossed the danger mark. Water has been flowing above the danger mark since Monday evening.
The low-lying areas along the Yamuna River are considered home to thousands of people. As the water level of the Yamuna River has been increasing continuously in the low-lying areas of the city, it forced the authorities to evacuate thousands of people living in the low-lying areas. They will be shifted to relief camps, community centres, schools, and other parts of the city.
Officials said the river breached the danger mark earlier than expected. Haryana released water into the river from the Hathnikund barrage. The Yamuna River, breached the danger mark of 205.33 metres last evening, and it reached 206.62 (reported) today.
The Delhi government has set up 16 control rooms to monitor the flood-prone areas. The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, said while addressing a press conference that for the first time in 40 years, Delhi has received such severe downpours. Last time the Yamuna River reached a record water level of 207.49 metres in 1978 – which is the “high-flood” level for the Yamuna.
On the other hand, people were leaving their homes for their own survival. Meantime, the people of Bodhi Ghat and Yamuna Bazaar are living in critical
situations.
Piyush Sharma, resident of Nigam Bodh Ghat, informed us that since last night, the water level of the Yamuna River has increased. The water reaches inside their houses. He added that we have no other option but to live in such a critical
situation.
Ruchi Devi, a resident of Ghat No. 14 at Yamuna Bazaar Ghat, said that we have been living here since 1980. She added that we have seen many governments, but no government has come to resolve our problem.
Rajeev, another resident of Bodhi Ghat, said that the government is useless. They just made fake promises at the time of the election. He further said that no politician had come forward to help us in this mess.
