Mumbai Flooding: Bus Seen Driving Through Waterlogged Streets Sparks Safety Worries

Mumbai’s troubles are expected to worsen as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain for the next two to three days. The city has already been significantly affected by the ongoing monsoon rains. With more heavy rains anticipated on Monday, the IMD has issued a yellow alert, and an orange alert for July 23.

Waterlogging caused by heavy rain is disrupting traffic throughout the city. A video posted on X shows a bus speeding through flooded streets while people walk in knee-deep water in Kurla. The caption read, “Situation Worsening in Central Mumbai. Scenes from Kurla.”

In the past 24 hours leading up to Monday at 8 a.m., several areas in Mumbai received over 200 mm of rain. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s automated weather station, Trombay recorded the highest rainfall at 241 mm. The IMD’s Santacruz observatory reported 176 mm of rainfall, while the Colaba station recorded 71 mm.

A high tide of over five meters is expected around 12:50 p.m. Navi Mumbai, due to its below-sea-level location, may experience waterlogging in some low-lying areas.

In response to the high tide and ongoing rain, the Numampa Education Department and the Disaster Management Department have announced that schools in Navi Mumbai will close in the afternoon. The continuous rain has also led to a 5% increase in lake levels over the past day, with water stocks in the seven lakes reaching 47.29% on Monday morning.
