Mumbai Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana Set to Be Lodged in Tihar Jail

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is being brought to India from the United States and is expected to be lodged in Tihar Jail’s high-security ward, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The 64-year-old Pakistan-born Canadian national is known to be a close associate of David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, one of the masterminds behind the horrific 26/11 attacks. Headley, a US citizen, had conducted reconnaissance missions for the Lashkar-e-Taiba before the attack.

Extradition Finally Moves Forward

Rana’s extradition process gained momentum after the US Supreme Court rejected his final appeal to block his transfer to India. A multi-agency Indian team is currently in the US to bring him back.

Prison sources revealed that extensive security arrangements have already been made at Tihar Jail to house him safely. However, authorities are awaiting a formal court order before confirming his exact placement within the prison complex.

Role in the 26/11 Terror Attacks

The 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, carried out by 10 Pakistani terrorists, left 166 people dead and hundreds injured. Over 60 hours, terrorists targeted the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident, CST railway station, and Nariman House, causing widespread panic and drawing international condemnation.

Rana is believed to have played a critical role in facilitating Headley’s movements and activities, making him a major link in the deadly operation that nearly pushed India and Pakistan to the brink of war.

What’s Next?

As the high-profile extradition nears completion, Indian authorities are preparing for tight security and legal proceedings. Once Rana is in Indian custody, he is likely to face interrogation by multiple intelligence agencies.

This extradition marks a significant development in India’s long pursuit of justice for the victims of 26/11.
