In a shocking incident, locals on Tuesday morning found the decapitated body of a young man lying along the railway tracks near Mullanpur railway station. Locals immediately informed the Mullanpur station master, who passed the information to the Jagraon Railway Police. A police team reached the spot and took the body into custody.
The police later identified the deceased as Shammi Kumar, 20, a daily wage labourer from Mandi Mullanpur. According to the officers, the young man had left home the previous evening but did not return. His family, which works as labourers, was heartbroken when they received the confirmation of his death.
Preliminary findings according to the officers point to a possible train accident. The officers believe that the youth might have been hit by a speeding train during the night.
Foul play has not been ruled out, however. Police are trying to establish if the injuries were from a train or if the body was placed on the tracks after murder.
Railway police official Prakash Singh said the team is looking into every angle. “Our initial observation suggests that he may have died after being hit by a train. But we are not jumping to conclusions. All possibilities are being checked carefully,” he said.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem, which will help the police understand the exact cause of death and time of the incident. Investigators are also checking CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning people who might have seen the victim last.
Neighbours revealed that the Kumar family had already suffered a major loss around ten months ago when Shammi’s elder brother had died. The sudden death of another young member has thrown the family into deep grief and shock.
The railway police have appealed to local residents to come forward if they have any information that can help the investigation. They said the case will be pursued seriously until the truth is brought to light. The incident has triggered fear among people in Mullanpur, where residents are still waiting for clarity on whether it was a tragic accident or something more sinister.
