Mukesh Ambani has once again claimed the crown of India’s richest man. On Wednesday, he was ranked at the top of the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2025, beating rival Gautam Adani. Mukesh Ambani’s family wealth is estimated at ₹9.55 lakh crore, while the Adani family holds ₹8.15 lakh crore.

Who is the Richest: Ambani or Adani

In 2024, Gautam Adani grabbed the No. 1 spot with ₹11.6 lakh crore, overtaking Mukesh Ambani. But this year, the chairman of Reliance Industries made a strong comeback. Ambani was also the richest in 2023, after dethroning Adani, who had led the list in 2022.

It’s not the first time Mukesh Ambani has dominated. He held the title of India’s richest man for 10 consecutive years until 2021. His latest return to the top cements his position as a long-time leader of India’s billionaire club.

India’s Richest Woman Joins the Top 3

This year’s list also highlights the rise of women billionaires. Roshni Nadar Malhotra, chairperson of HCL Technologies, entered the Top 3 for the first time. She now holds the title of India’s richest woman with a net worth of ₹2.84 lakh crore. Her achievement signals the growing influence of women leaders in India’s corporate world.

Billionaires at a Record High

India now has a record 358 dollar billionaires, showing a sixfold rise since the Hurun list was first published 13 years ago. Together, their wealth adds up to ₹167 lakh crore. That’s equal to nearly half of India’s GDP, underlining how much economic power is concentrated among India’s richest families and entrepreneurs.

Young & Self-Made Billionaires

A new generation of wealth producers is also featured on the list. With a net worth of ₹21,900 crore, Aravind Srinivas, 31-year-old founder of the AI company Perplexity, became the youngest billionaire in India.

Interestingly, 66% of the names on the list are self-made billionaires, showing how new businesses and startups are shaping India’s wealth landscape. Among the fresh entrants, nearly three out of four built their fortunes from scratch.

Mumbai Leads India’s Billionaire Map

Mumbai continues to be India’s billionaire capital. The city is home to 451 of the country’s richest individuals. New Delhi follows with 223, while Bengaluru takes third place with 116 billionaires. This shows how India’s financial hubs continue to attract and create massive wealth.

Wealth Concentration in India’s Economy

Analysts warn about growing disparities between the ultra-rich and the general population, even as the surge in billionaires underscores India’s economic expansion. According to experts, the fact that billionaire wealth now accounts for about half of the nation’s GDP may lead to new discussions regarding taxation, wealth redistribution, and income inequality.
