The Parliament 2025 Monsoon Session started on a tense note on Monday, with the Opposition set to pin down the government on a range of sensitive national and global issues. They cover the latest Pahalgam terror attack, Indian Army high-profile operation Sindoor, Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) program, Ahmedabad Air India plane crash tragedy, and incendiary comments by ex-US President Donald Trump regarding facilitating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
The Monsoon Session will last from July 21 to August 21, taking a recess from August 12 to August 18, totaling 21 sittings over 32 days. The session is likely to see fiery debates, vitriolic political confrontation, and significant legislation.
Some of the bills to be put to discussion include the Income-Tax Bill, which was presented during the Budget Session earlier this year, and the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2024, the Bills of Lading Bill, the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, and the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill.
Speaking to the country at the beginning of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi linked the symbolism of monsoons to development and new beginnings.
“Monsoon symbolises innovation and new beginnings. According to the latest reports, the season is developing favorably across the country. It is expected to greatly benefit agriculture. Rain plays a crucial role, not just for farmers and rural communities, but also for the national economy and the livelihood of every household,” PM Modi stated.

While mentioning Operation Sindoor, the Prime Minister appreciated the Indian Army for its speed and accuracy.
“This monsoon session is a celebration of victory. The whole world has seen the strength of India’s military power. The target set by the Indian Army in Operation Sindoor was achieved 100%. Under Operation Sindoor, the houses of the masters of terrorists were razed to the ground within 22 minutes,” he said.

He further added, “The world has been highly drawn towards this new type of Made in India military strength. Today, when I meet individuals of the world, the world’s interest in the Made in India weapons being produced by India is growing.”
The Congress will presumably put pressure on the government to clear the air on Donald Trump’s assertions of having brokered a May 2025 India-Pakistan ceasefire. The Opposition will presumably call for an accounting on the recent Pahalgam terror attack that killed security men and civilians and also on the Air India plane crash in which more than 200 lives were lost.
Political commentators expect a heated session, with the BJP showcasing national security successes and the Opposition bringing to the fore governance, transparency, and foreign policy.
