Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held high profile meeting at Hyderabad House. After their discussions, both leaders addressed the media together. This marks Putin’s first visit to India in four years and his first trip since the Russia-Ukraine war began.
President Vladimir Putin thanked PM Modi for India’s efforts toward peace in Ukraine. Praising the depth of the relationship, he said, "Our relations are deeply rooted in history – but it's not words that matter, it's the substance, which is profound."
PM Modi said that India’s role in 2001 showed how long-term thinking and strong leadership can shape powerful partnerships. He said, "I believe that the role we played in 2001 is a perfect example of how a visionary leader thinks where they begin and how far they can take relationships. India–Russia relations are the finest example of this.”
PM Modi highlighted India and Russia’s united stand against terrorism. He said, "India and Russia have long been standing shoulder to shoulder in the fight against terrorism. Whether it is the terrorist attack in Pahalgam or the cowardly attack on the Crocus City Hall, the root of all these incidents is the same. India's unwavering belief is that terrorism is a direct assault on the values of humanity and that global unity against it is our greatest strength. India and Russia have close cooperation in the UN, G20, BRICS, SCO, and other forums. We will continue our dialogue and cooperation in all these forums..."
PM Modi said bilateral ties are reaching significant milestones. He noted that fifteen years ago, in 2010, the relationship was upgraded to a Special Privileged Strategic Partnership.
He stated, "...Fifteen years ago, in 2010, our partnership was granted the status of a Special Privileged Strategic Partnership. For the past two and a half decades, he (President Putin) has nurtured this relationship with his leadership and vision. His leadership, under all circumstances, has elevated our ties to new heights. I express my heartfelt gratitude to President Putin, my friend, for this deep friendship and unwavering commitment to India."
During the summit, both leaders witnessed the exchange of several agreements between India and Russia.
PM Modi stressed that energy cooperation has been one of the strongest pillars of India-Russia relations. He pointed to decades of partnership in civil nuclear energy that have supported clean-energy goals. He also said that cooperation in critical minerals is important for secure global supply chains and will help both countries in clean energy, high-tech manufacturing, and future industries.
He further emphasised shipbuilding as an area with huge potential, saying it can support the “Make in India” initiative, generate employment, develop skills, and improve regional connectivity.
PM Modi said that even with global challenges over the past eight decades, the relationship between India and Russia has stayed strong and stable, “like a pole star.”
Speaking on the Ukraine conflict, PM Modi said that India has always supported peaceful dialogue and a long-term solution. He added that India welcomes every effort toward peace and will continue contributing wherever possible.
