Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reacted to the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, wishing him good health and recognizing his years of selfless service to the country.

“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has received numerous opportunities to serve our nation in different roles, one of them being as the Vice President of India. Good health to him,” the Prime Minister posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The Prime Minister’s statement followed one day after Dhankhar had resigned as Vice President and sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu. In his formal letter, Dhankhar gave health grounds for his resignation.

“To make health care a priority and follow medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India with immediate effect, as per Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” he wrote.

Dhankhar’s resignation brings to an abrupt conclusion what was to be a five-year term. He had taken office in August 2022 and was scheduled to hold office until August 2027. Besides being Vice President, he was also ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

His unexpected exit on the very first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament has sparked broad speculation among political commentators and media writers. Yet, no more information on his health status has been made known so far.

Both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were officially notified of Dhankhar’s resignation on Tuesday. Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was in the Chair during Question Hour in the Upper House, read the Ministry of Home Affairs notification:

“The Ministry of Home Affairs, vide notification dated July 22, 2025, has conveyed the resignation of Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar under Article 67(a) of the Constitution with immediate effect.”

Deputy Chairman Harivansh also spoke during the House, stating that the constitutional process regarding the vacancy would be informed in due course.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has already informed the Election Commission, it has been reported by sources, as the Vice President’s position cannot be left vacant for long.

As the country begins to reconcile with the unexpected departure of one of its highest-ranking constitutional officials, all eyes are now on how to choose a new Vice President.
