During his recent visit to the Maldives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the country’s Vice President, Hussain Mohamed Latheef, on Saturday. Both leaders discussed major pillars of India-Maldives cooperation. These included technology, infrastructure development, energy, and climate change.
After the meeting, PM Modi shared a message on social media platform X, saying, “Had a very good meeting with Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef. Our discussion touched upon key pillars of the India-Maldives friendship. Our nations continue to work closely in sectors like infrastructure, technology, climate change, energy and more. This is greatly beneficial to our people. We look forward to deepening this partnership in the years to come.”

India-Maldives: A Timeless Friendship
PM Modi visited the Maldives on the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu and was the Guest of Honour at the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations.
At a banquet held in his honour on Friday, the Prime Minister highlighted the historical and emotional ties between the two nations. He said, “India-Maldives relations are centuries old. We are neighbours, partners and true friends who stand together in times of need. Maldives holds a special place in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy… This is not just diplomacy but a relation of deep affinity.”
President Muizzu Praises India’s Role
Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu also acknowledged India’s crucial role in supporting the Maldives.
He said, “India has long stood as the Maldives’s closest and most trusted partner. Our collaboration spans a wide range of areas, from security and trade to healthcare, education and beyond, touching the everyday lives of our citizens.”
New Agreements and Broader Partnership
In a special press briefing on Friday, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the visit as “very timely and productive.”
He explained that the discussions allowed both sides to review the India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership.
“We should continue to implement various elements of this vision, and explore newer avenues to collaborate further between the two sides,” he added.
As a major outcome of the visit, India and Maldives signed eight key agreements. These covered critical areas such as:

Expansion of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the Maldives
These agreements were signed in the presence of PM Modi and President Muizzu, showcasing the continued commitment of both countries to enhance their strategic and economic engagement.
