In a tragic incident on Wednesday morning, six women lost their lives after being hit by a train at Chunar Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district. The accident took place around 9:30 am when the Chopan-Prayagraj passenger train arrived at the station.
How Mirzapur Accident Happened?
According to early reports, the victims got off the train on the side opposite the main platform. They tried to cross the railway tracks to reach the other side. However, as they were doing so, another train — the Netaji Express — passed through at high speed, catching them off guard. Before they could react, the speeding train struck them, killing all six on the spot.
Additional Director General (Railways) Prakash D said that “the identities of all the six victims are being established.” Police later confirmed that all of them were residents of Mirzapur district.
Panic at the Station
The incident created panic among passengers at the station. Railway and local police officers quickly arrived at the site to carry out rescue and relief operations. Senior officials also reached the scene to oversee the situation and ensured that the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.
CM Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the victims’ families. Taking immediate action, he directed senior officials to visit the accident site and make sure relief and rescue operations were carried out swiftly. The Chief Minister also instructed SDRF and NDRF teams to reach the location promptly and intensify efforts on a war footing. He further emphasized that those injured in the incident must receive proper medical care without delay.
Official Statement from the Railways
In an official release, the North East Central Railway explained the sequence of events “As per details, Train No. 13309 (Chopan-Prayagraj Passenger) arrived at platform number 4 of Chunar Station at 9.15 am. Some passengers, in haste, got down on the track side instead of the platform side, even though a foot overbridge is available at the station. At the same time, Train No. 12311 (Netaji Express) was passing through the main line (line no. 3), and a few passengers came under its impact. In this unfortunate incident, a total of six passengers lost their lives.”
The railway administration also extended condolences to the victims’ families and appealed to passengers to always use the platform side and never cross railway tracks, stressing that such actions are “extremely risky and unsafe.” The statement concluded with an appeal for public cooperation to ensure safe train travel and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
