India and the United States continue to strengthen their defence partnership, which is a key part of their overall bilateral relationship, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the partnership is built on strong defence agreements. Cooperation between the two countries has grown across all areas, including strategy, operations, and joint exercises.

This defence relationship is important for regional stability and global security. The MEA said that the partnership goes beyond military matters and forms a vital part of the wider India-US relationship.

Upcoming Defence Initiatives

Several important defence engagements are planned this month. A US Defence Policy Team is expected in Delhi in mid-August to discuss defence policies and cooperation. At the same time, the 21st edition of the joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas is scheduled to take place in Alaska later this month.

Both countries are also preparing for the 2+2 Intersessional meeting at the working level towards the end of August. These activities show how India and the US are working closely to improve their military and strategic coordination.

Addressing Diplomatic Differences

India also responded to the recent US State Department Human Rights report. The MEA described the report as “a mix of imputations, misrepresentations, and one-sided projections” that show a poor understanding of India’s democracy, diverse society, and strong institutions for protecting human rights.

Jaiswal emphasized that in India, such biased assessments are rarely taken seriously. Instead, India places a higher priority on promoting human rights through inclusive governance and growth. The administration continues to interact with external partners while strengthening its democratic processes.

Strengthening Cooperation Despite Differences

India-US defence cooperation shows that countries can maintain strong ties even if they have differences in other areas. Exercises like Yudh Abhyas improve practical skills and operational readiness. Policy-level meetings will help both countries to align on regional security priorities.

The upcoming visits and discussions indicate that both India and the US are committed to keeping their defence relationship strong. These steps ensure that the partnership grows steadily, regardless of occasional diplomatic disputes.
