MCD House adjourned amid furor over alleged attack on AAP’s Swati Maliwal

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House adjourned on Tuesday without any deliberation due to a commotion caused by BJP councillors regarding the alleged assault of Aam Admi Party MP Swati Maliwal and demands for the appointment of a ‘Dalit’ Mayor. BJP councillors, brandishing placards, also chanted slogans against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

After the House adjourned, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi informed ANI, “All the BJP councillors created chaos inside the house… BJP councillors obstructed discussions on MCD issues… For the past 1-1.5 years, BJP has hindered the formation of standing committees, special committees, and ward committees…”

No official statements were issued regarding the alleged incident by the ruling party, MP Maliwal, or the CM’s office. Delhi Police stated on Monday that no complaint had been filed concerning the purported assault on Swati Maliwal at the Chief Minister’s residence.

DCP Manoj Kumar Meena told ANI on Monday, “At around 9.34 am, we received a PCR call stating that she had been assaulted inside the CM’s residence. Local police responded, and MP Swati Maliwal later visited the police station Civil Lines but left without filing any complaints. No complaints have been received regarding this matter.”

This incident occurred just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in the National Capital and following Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s release from jail, with the Supreme Court granting him interim bail until June 1.

All seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi will hold elections on May 25, with the Aam Admi Party and Congress forming a joint alliance. Under the agreement, AAP will contest 4 seats, and Congress will contest 3.

The first four phases of polling took place on April 19, April 26, May 7, and May 13, with the next three rounds scheduled for May 20, May 26, and June 1.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are being conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with results expected on June 4.
