Mayawati Reveals Reasons for Breaking SP-BSP Alliance Post-2019 Elections

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati on Thursday detailed the reasons behind the dissolution of the alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP) following the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In a newly released booklet, Mayawati claimed that SP chief Akhilesh Yadav stopped answering calls from BSP leaders after the alliance’s disappointing performance in the polls.

The BSP and SP had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections together but won only 15 seats combined—Mayawati securing 10 and Yadav five in Uttar Pradesh. According to Mayawati, the lack of communication and the poor electoral outcome led to the decision to end the alliance. “To preserve the honour of the party, we had to break the alliance with SP,” she stated in the booklet.

Mayawati also criticized the SP-Congress alliance in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, alleging that it has misled voters in the Pichhda, Dalit, and Alpasankhyak (PDA) communities by promising to protect the Constitution and reservations. She cautioned that the PDA communities would gain little from this alliance and urged vigilance against the SP.

The booklet, aimed at BSP party workers, outlines the party’s ideology and strategy for the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and provides insights into the critical decisions made by Mayawati.
