The Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir has been temporarily suspended due to adverse weather conditions. Authorities stopped the yatra from Sunday, October 5, after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning of heavy rain, cloudbursts, and landslides in the Trikuta hills region.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) announced that the yatra will remain suspended till Tuesday, October 7, and is expected to restart on Wednesday, October 8, if conditions improve.

Shrine Board Issues Advisory

The Shrine Board shared an update on the social media platform X, urging devotees to follow only official channels for accurate information.

“Yatra Update. In view of the inclement weather advisory issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, Vaishno Devi Yatra shall remain suspended from 5th to 7th October 2025 & will resume on 08/10/2025. Devotees may stay updated through official channels. @OfficeOfLGJandK,” the board wrote.

Officials have requested pilgrims to plan their travel only after checking the latest updates. The precautionary step was taken to avoid risks from landslides, cloudbursts, and flooding that often follow heavy rainfall in the region.

Previous Suspensions This Year

This is not the first time the Vaishno Devi Yatra has been halted in 2025. The pilgrimage faced multiple suspensions earlier due to flash floods and landslides. The most tragic incident occurred on August 26 when a landslide near Ardhkuwari killed 34 people and injured 20 others. The yatra remained closed for 22 days after that disaster and resumed on September 17.

Pilgrim Turnout During Navratri

Despite repeated suspensions, the yatra saw a strong turnout during Navratri in September. More than 1.70 lakh devotees visited the shrine after the pilgrimage resumed, according to officials. The journey went on smoothly throughout the festive period, with no major disruptions reported.

Devotees Urged to Stay Updated

With weather conditions changing quickly in the hilly terrain, the Shrine Board has reminded pilgrims to stay alert and avoid relying on unverified news. The board assured that updates about the yatra will be shared promptly through official platforms.

The Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, located atop the Trikuta hills in Reasi district, attracts millions of pilgrims each year. Safety remains the top priority for the administration as they balance faith and precaution.
