Fresh unrest broke out in Kangpokpi, Manipur, as a mob stormed and attacked the Deputy Commissioner’s office, leaving a police officer injured. The situation in the Kuki-dominated district remains extremely tense. A group of people marched toward the administrative headquarters in Kangpokpi town, targeting the Deputy Commissioner’s office, according to police.
This violent episode comes shortly after a confrontation in the Saibol area, where Kuki women protested against security forces following a recent operation. The operation, conducted on December 29 by joint forces including the BSF, Army, and CRPF, dismantled militant bunkers and cleared the region of armed groups.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh recently apologised for the ethnic violence that has plagued the state since May 2023, urging all communities to “forgive and forget.” However, tensions remain high, with over 200 fatalities and thousands displaced due to the ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities over quotas and economic benefits.
Despite the Chief Minister’s assurances of peace being restored, incidents like these underscore the fragile and volatile situation in the state.
