Manipur: Total Curfew Imposed in Imphal Amid Escalating Violence; 23 Arrested

Authorities in Manipur have imposed a total curfew in Imphal until further notice following a surge in violent incidents targeting the homes and properties of public representatives. The Manipur Police confirmed on Sunday that 23 individuals were arrested in connection with alleged ransacking and arson activities.

– Arrests and Recoveries:
– The arrests were made across Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur districts.
– Police recovered a .32 pistol, seven rounds of SBBL ammunition, and eight mobile phones from the suspects.

– Injuries and Security Measures:

– Eight people sustained injuries during efforts to disperse mobs attacking the residences of state ministers and MLAs.
– Security forces, including the Army and Assam Rifles, were deployed in the city. Flag marches were conducted to restore order.
– Manipur Police stated: *“Irate mobs targeted various houses and properties of public representatives in Imphal. Tear gas shells were used to disperse the crowds.”*

– Curfew and Internet Shutdown:

– A total curfew was immediately enforced in Imphal, with Internet and mobile data services suspended for two days to prevent the spread of misinformation.
– Senior officers are closely monitoring the situation around the clock, with additional district-level forces deployed to maintain law and order.

On Saturday, Manipur Police highlighted extensive security operations:
– Search and area domination were conducted in vulnerable hill and valley districts.
– 456 vehicles carrying essential supplies were escorted along National Highway-2.
– A total of 107 checkpoints were set up across the state to enhance vigilance.
