President’s Rule Imposed in Manipur Following Biren Singh’s Resignation

President’s Rule has been implemented in Manipur following the resignation of BJP leader N Biren Singh as the state’s Chief Minister.

Biren Singh stepped down from his position on Sunday, amid ongoing ethnic violence that has affected the state since May 2023. The imposition of President’s Rule came after President Droupadi Murmu received a report from the state Governor.

The unrest in Manipur began on May 3, 2023, when clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities after a rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM). The protest followed a directive from the Manipur High Court, which had instructed the state to consider adding the Meitei community to the Scheduled Tribes list.

In his resignation letter, Biren Singh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Manipur.

“I am extremely grateful to the Central government for timely actions, interventions, developmental work and implementation of various projects for safeguarding the interest of every single Manipuri,” he stated.

Opposition parties had been calling for Biren Singh’s resignation in response to the ongoing ethnic violence in the state.
