A 41-year-old man, Nishant Tripathi, died by suicide in Mumbai’s Sahara Hotel, allegedly due to harassment from his wife, Apoorva Parikh, and his aunt, Prarthana Mishra. Before taking his life, Tripathi checked into the hotel three days earlier and hung a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign outside his room. He also wrote a letter, which he uploaded to his company’s website, holding his wife and aunt responsible for his death.

The police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Tripathi’s wife and aunt on charges of abetment to suicide, but no one has been arrested so far. Tripathi was discovered hanging in the bathroom after hotel staff opened his room with a master key, after a long period of non-response. His body was taken for post-mortem, and the airport police were informed.

While investigating, the authorities found a suicide note posted on Tripathi’s business website. He mentioned loving his wife but held both his wife and aunt responsible for his death in the note. “Hi babe, by the time you read this, I’ll be gone. In my last moments, I could’ve hated you for everything that happened, but I don’t. For this moment, I choose love. I loved you then. I love you now. And as I had promised, it’s not going to fade,” Tripathi wrote in his last message to his wife. He continued, “My mother knows that among all the other hardships I endured, you and Prarthana Mausi [aunt] are also to blame for my death. So, I beg of you, don’t go to her now. She’s shattered enough. Let her mourn in peace.”

Neelam Chaturvedi, Tripathi’s mother, posted her sheer sorrow on social media, saying, “Friends, I am Neelam Chaturvedi. You see me as a living being, but in reality, I am already dead. I am a living corpse today.” She talked about how close she and her son were, saying, “My son, Nishant. He was my everything. Both my children loved me very much, but Nishant was my friend, my companion, and my biggest support. He was my strength, the source of my energy to live and work. My life is over now.”

Chaturvedi also said that she had devoted her life to the struggle for women’s rights, gender equality, and so on. She had supported more than 46,000 women through initiatives such as Sakhi Kendra, obtaining justice for over 37,000 and empowering thousands with jobs and training. She also brought up her children by herself and is proud of that.

After her son’s death, Chaturvedi filed a complaint at the Airport Police Station. Initially, an Accidental Death Report (ADR) was registered, but after the mother’s complaint, a case was filed against Tripathi’s wife and aunt under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code.
