Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was admitted to Fortis Hospital, Mohali, late Wednesday night, following concerns over his health. According to sources, the CM fainted multiple times and is undergoing thorough medical tests. Though the exact nature of the illness has not been disclosed, officials confirmed that Mann is in stable condition.
A late evening statement from the CMO said various tests are being conducted to assess his health condition. According to the doctors, the Chief Minister is currently in good health and has no significant issues, it said.
“However, the doctors have found symptoms of inflammation in an artery of his lungs, which is putting pressure on his heart, causing fluctuations in blood pressure. Further tests are required, and additional blood tests have been conducted, the results of which are still pending. Therefore, we will keep the Chief Minister under observation overnight and make a decision after reviewing the reports tomorrow morning,” it added.
Earlier in the day, AAP claimed that the Chief Minister was admitted for a routine check-up.
Only a few days earlier, Mann had to return to Delhi from Mohali airport after experiencing low blood pressure.
Shiromani Akali Dal Majithia leader Bikram Majithia has raised doubts over the AAP narrative. He claimed “credible information” that Mann is in an advanced stage of liver disease. Majithia said that Mann had been hospitalised in an emergency due to fluid accumulation in his lungs and stomach, causing breathlessness—symptoms consistent with liver cirrhosis. He claimed the government tried to keep the hospitalisation secret, only releasing a brief statement after his public tweet on the issue.
Majithia further said that if Mann’s hospitalization was truly for a routine check-up, there would have been no need to admit him late at night, and the extended stay suggests a more serious health condition. He urged the government to be transparent, stating that Punjabis deserve to know the health status of their Chief Minister, particularly given Punjab’s sensitive border location.
Majithia also highlighted previous instances of Mann’s deteriorating health, noting that the CM had recently been treated at a private hospital in Delhi. He emphasized the need for clarity, drawing parallels to the secrecy surrounding Tamil Nadu’s late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s health, which led to public speculation and investigations.
The SAD leader called on both the Punjab government and hospital authorities to disclose the Chief Minister’s exact condition and treatment.
Majithia wished Mann a speedy recovery.
