Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has declared that the Sewri-Worli connector is set to open for traffic by the end of December 2025, alongside the commissioning of an extra 37 kilometers of Metro lines in the state within this fiscal year.
In his budget speech, Pawar said, “Metro lines spanning 449km have been sanctioned in the cities of Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur out of which 127km are operational. Another 37km of Metro lines will be made operational in this financial year.”
The upcoming projects include the 32.5km Metro 3 corridor, Phase I (Aarey-BKC) opening in Sept, and the rest to Cuffe Parade by Dec. Also, the 3.7km Metro line from Civil Court to Swargate in Pune will be inaugurated.
Meanwhile, Pawar said, “Work on the Sewri-Worli link road under the Sewri-Nhava Sheva project is 57% complete. The project is expected to be finished by the end of Dec 2025.”
The proposed corridor on MTHL is expected to handle 15% of the traffic, cutting travel time between the east and west coasts to just 10 minutes from the current 40-60 minutes.
Additionally, the Rs 3,364 crore Thane coastal road, spanning 13.45km from Balkum to Gaimukh, is set for completion by May 2028. It will feature six lanes to cater to traffic bound for Gujarat, Nashik, Bhiwandi, and northern India.
The coastal road project, initially under TMC’s development plan, was later transferred to MMRDA due to extensive permissions and cost escalation, making it impractical for the local authority to manage.
It stretches from Kharegaon Toll Naka on Mumbai Nashik Highway (NH-3) to Ghodbunder State Highway (SH-42) near Gaimukh, alongside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park Eco-Sensitive Zone, according to an official.
The project aims to connect NH3, Old Agra Road, SH-4, and the Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, providing an alternative route for heavy goods traffic from Gujarat, north India, and JNPT, bypassing Ghodbunder Road.
