The Uttar Pradesh Police have initiated legal action against two social media accounts accused of sharing and selling objectionable videos of women pilgrims bathing at the Maha Kumbh. The move comes as part of a larger effort to curb misleading and offensive content related to the religious event.
Social Media Monitoring Leads to Swift Action
According to a police statement issued on Wednesday, social media monitoring teams detected that certain accounts were posting and distributing videos that violated the privacy and dignity of women attending the Kumbh. Following this discovery, cases were promptly registered at the Kotwali Kumbh Mela police station, and legal proceedings have been set in motion.
Investigation Underway, Action Against Violators
On February 17, police filed a case against an Instagram account allegedly responsible for posting inappropriate videos. Authorities have requested Meta, the parent company of Instagram, to provide details of the account operator, and necessary legal action, including arrest, will be taken upon receiving the information.
In another incident on February 19, a Telegram channel was found offering similar content for sale. The police have launched an investigation into the channel’s activities, with legal proceedings currently in progress.
Strict Measures Against Social Media Misuse
Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar has directed law enforcement officials to take stringent action against individuals misusing social media platforms to circulate offensive or misleading content about the Maha Kumbh. The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the sanctity of the event and ensuring that any violations are dealt with severely.
Authorities have urged the public to report such incidents and assured that strict measures will continue against those who attempt to exploit religious gatherings for unethical purposes.
