In the night sky today over India, the year’s most mesmerizing celestial event is unfolding. Now visible is the magnificent Blood Moon event, a total lunar eclipse that illuminates the entire nation in a coppery-red hue.It is a breathtaking sight for eighty-two minutes as the moon has fully sunk into the Earth’s shadow.

This event is not just an astronomical marvel but also holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, with specific rituals traditionally performed after it concludes.

What is The View Now?

The moon has fully immersed itself in the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra. This phase, called the totality, began at 11:01 PM and will continue until 12:23 AM. During this entire 82-minute window, the moon will appear as a dramatic “Blood Moon.”

This is a safe event to view with the naked eye, binoculars, or a telescope. Step outside and look up to witness this incredible natural phenomenon.

What is the Cultural and Spiritual Significance?

In India, celestial events are closely linked with spiritual traditions, and the lunar eclipse, or Chandra Grahan, holds particular significance To cleanse both oneself and the surroundings, certain practices are traditionally observed during the eclipse, followed by specific rituals once it ends. Additionally, it is participating in Pitra Paksh this time, which makes it a more important occasion.

What to Do After the Grahan Ends?

Once the eclipse is over, following Hindu scriptures these actions are observed :

  • Take a Purifying Bath: The first step after the eclipse ends is to take a bath. Bathing in a holy river or pilgrimage site is seen as extremely auspicious, if at all possible. If that is not feasible, adding a few drops of Ganga Jal (water from the Ganges) to your bathwater at home is recommended.
  • Clean the Home and Temple: It is customary to clean the entire house and the home temple after an eclipse. Since this eclipse is ending late at night, it is advised to rest after your bath and wake up early during the Brahma Muhurta (the auspicious period before sunrise).
  • Morning Rituals: Upon waking early the next morning, take another bath. Then, sprinkle Ganga Jal throughout the house and in the home temple. In the temple, light a lamp (diya) and use Ganga Jal to bathe the deity ritually.

These practices are followed by many as a means of spiritual cleansing and ushering in positive energy.
