A total lunar eclipse, also called Chandra Grahan or the Blood Moon, will appear in the night sky on September 7-8, 2025. People in India will be able to see this rare event for a little more than 48 minutes.

Eclipse Timings in India

In Delhi, the eclipse will begin with the penumbral phase at 8:58 pm. The partial eclipse will start around 9:57 pm. The total eclipse, when the Moon looks completely red, will reach its peak at 11:48 pm. The event will last for about 48 minutes, giving people enough time to enjoy the view.

OP Gupta, a senior engineer at Delhi's Nehru Planetarium, confirmed these details to ANI.

Visible in Many Countries

The lunar eclipse will be visible in India, Australia, the Far East, the Middle East, Europe, and some parts of Africa. People in North and South America will not be able to see it.

Dr Devi Prasad Duari, former director of MP Birla Planetarium, called the eclipse a global "mesmerising" event.

Longest Eclipse Since 2022

This is the second total lunar eclipse of 2025. The first happened in March. It will also be the longest lunar eclipse since 2022, which makes it very special for skywatchers.

A lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up. Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon, making it turn red.

Why the Moon Looks Red

During the eclipse, Earth’s atmosphere changes how sunlight reaches the Moon. Ryan Milligan, an astrophysicist at Queen’s University Belfast, explained, “Blue light is scattered more easily than red, leaving the Moon with its iconic ‘bloody glow’.”

That is why the Moon looks red or copper during the eclipse.

Safe to Watch

Unlike a solar eclipse, you do not need glasses or tools to see a lunar eclipse. It is safe to watch with your eyes. Just look up at the sky if the weather is clear.

A Magical Sight Through History

For hundreds of years, people have been amazed and sometimes even scared of the Blood Moon. Today, it is one of the most exciting events for astronomy lovers around the world.
