The shutdown was prompted by remarks made during a Mahagathbandhan event in Darbhanga last week. BJP’s state president, Dilip Jaiswal, strongly condemned the comments, calling them “objectionable and deeply insulting.” He demanded an apology from the opposition.
Janata Dal (United) leader Umesh Kushwaha also criticized the language used, telling ANI, “This is wrong, both morally and politically.” He added that the opposition leaders’ failure to apologize “shows how arrogant they are.” He stated that since the comments “have insulted our mothers and sisters, and now we will retaliate.” The protest is being led by the BJP’s women’s wing, or Mahila Morcha, to emphasize this point.
Prime Minister Modi Responds
Prime Minister Modi also commented on the issue while speaking at a rally. Without directly naming them, he criticized INDIA bloc leaders Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, calling them “naamdaar” leaders who were born with privilege.
He said, “The struggles of a poor mother, the suffering of her son these young princes born into royal families cannot understand. The power of the country and Bihar seems like an inheritance of their family to them.”
pic.twitter.com/0FWmtBOCWy

Impact of the Bandh
The protest has caused large-scale disruptions across Bihar. Educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and coaching centers, remained shut. Government offices and many private businesses also downed shutters in response to the bandh. Public transport took a severe hit, with intercity bus services suspended and protesters staging chakka jam blockades that led to major traffic snarls on several key routes.
Despite the shutdown, essential services have been kept out of the bandh to reduce public inconvenience. Hospitals, medical clinics, and pharmacies are functioning, while shops selling groceries, milk, and vegetables remain open. Rail services have been exempted to ensure mobility for passengers.

Arrest in the Case
The controversy stems from comments allegedly made by a 25-year-old man, who has since been arrested. However, the Congress-led INDIA bloc has clarified that he is not connected with any of its member parties, dismissing attempts to link the remarks to opposition leadership. The statewide bandh in Bihar was called after outrage erupted over derogatory remarks allegedly made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The controversy quickly snowballed into a political flashpoint, with rival parties exchanging blame. While opposition leaders distanced themselves, the incident triggered widespread anger on the ground, leading to the bandh call by political and social groups.
