Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered a time-bound magisterial inquiry into the Arhama encounter in Ganderbal, which resulted in the death of a local resident, Raashid Ahmad Mughal, sparking concern and political debate across the region.

According to an official statement issued by the LG’s office on X, the inquiry will be thorough, impartial, and transparent, covering all aspects of the April 1 incident. The Home Department has directed the District Magistrate to conduct a detailed probe to establish the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Mughal, a resident of Chuntwaliwar Lar. The report has been mandated to be submitted within seven days.

The incident has triggered reactions from locals and civil society, with many demanding clarity and accountability. Family members of the deceased have reportedly raised concerns over the circumstances of the encounter, urging authorities to ensure a fair and independent investigation.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stressed the need for a credible and transparent inquiry, stating that the concerns of the family must not be ignored. He added that public trust can only be maintained if the findings are shared openly within a fixed timeframe.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti echoed similar views, calling for accountability and fairness. She noted that such incidents tend to deepen mistrust among the public and emphasized that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done.

With the administration ordering a swift probe, attention now turns to the findings of the inquiry, which are expected to bring clarity and accountability to the incident.
