A major controversy over the proposed sale of a prime land parcel in Pune’s Model Colony has escalated, with the city’s Jain community threatening an indefinite agitation from November 1. The conflict is over land belonging to the Jain Boarding Trust, known for its community hostels, and claims that it was sold to a private developer.
What is the Core of the Land Dispute?
The conflict began after reports emerged of a deal between the Jain Boarding Trust and a private developer, Gokhale Constructions. Community leaders and monks have strongly protested, claiming serious irregularities and rule violations regarding the trust’s property. They say the land, home to hostels for both Digambar and Shwetambar Jains, belongs to the community for charitable use and shouldn’t be sold for profit. This led them to formally approach the office of the Charity Commissioner to halt the transaction.

What Legal Action Has Been Taken So Far?
Responding to the allegations, Mumbai Charity Commissioner Amogh Kaloti intervened with a decisive legal order. He put a status quo on the deal between the Jain trust and the developer, stopping any land transfer or construction until further hearings. This legal pause was the first major win for the protesting community, temporarily halting the sale.
Why is the Protest Threat Still Active?
Despite the status quo, community leaders remain unhappy. At a public meeting, Acharya Gurudev Shri Guptinandji Maharaj warned that if the deal isn’t cancelled by November 1, they will start an indefinite protest. The community wants the sale fully cancelled, not just paused.

How are Politicians Responding to the Crisis?
The issue has ignited a significant political clash. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, during a Pune visit, was seen discussing the matter with Congress MLA Ravindra Dhangekar. Shinde later told reporters, “I have spoken to Dhangekar and told him that the issue… is resolved.” However, Dhangekar has continued to target BJP leader and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, accusing him of favouring the developer. In response, BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that MP Mohol has already met with Jain monks and assured them the matter is being handled responsibly, aiming to avert the planned protest.
