Comedian Kunal Kamra, who was already in the middle of a controversy for his mockery of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has gone viral again—this time for his satirical response to industrialist Anand Mahindra.
In a widely shared clip, Kamra made light of Mahindra’s incessant social media posts, commenting, “Anand Mahindra bhi buddha hai (Anand Mahindra is also old). He tweets about everything – thermodynamics, marine biology, radioactivity – except how to make his cars better.”
Kunal Kamra also mocked Mahindra’s participation in AI conferences, joking that sarcastic invitations were misinterpreted as real interest.
Kunal Kamra Mocks Mahindra’s Optimism Amid Crisis
Kamra also mocked Mahindra’s upbeat attitude during crises. He remembered a past tweet in which Anand Mahindra shared a video of kids playing on a double-decker bus amidst the floods in Mumbai, captioned, “When life gives you lemons.” The comedian mocked the tweet, suggesting that optimism must not hijack serious issues.
Controversy of Kunal Kamra Over Shinde Parody Escalates
Kamra’s recent set at the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai’s Khar aimed at Eknath Shinde sparked major outrage. BJP leader Pravin Darekar filed a breach of privilege notice against Kamra, accusing him of using “personal and insulting references” against the Deputy CM.
A parody song sung by Kamra on January 3 resurfaced months later, prompting violent retribution. Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) supporters vandalized the comedy club and the hotel where the performance took place, sparking a legal battle and public debate over artistic freedom.
Legal Battle Intensifies
In fear of arrest, 36-year-old Kamra has moved the Madras High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail. His lawyer, V Suresh, moved the petition late last night, stating that the allegations brought against Kamra are “frivolous” and intended to “harass and intimidate” Kamra. The petition claims that Kamra was exercising his fundamental right to freedom of speech.
At the same time, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for an apology from Kamra, and opposition leader Uddhav Thackeray has stood up for the comedian’s right to satire. Undeterred by the backlash, Kamra took to Instagram and shared a photo of himself cradling the Indian Constitution on Sunday night, captioned: “The only way forward.”
