Alikhan, originally from Ponnani in Malappuram and employed as an LIC agent, tragically passed away after an upper berth allegedly collapsed on him while he was traveling on a train from Thrissur to New Delhi. The incident occurred on June 16, and despite receiving medical attention for over a week, the 62-year-old succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
Accompanied by his friend Muhammed, Alikhan had boarded the Ernakulam-Hazrat Nizamuddin express on the night of June 15. They were en route to Jalandhar, where Muhammed’s daughter is studying in college, with plans to visit Delhi and Agra before heading to Punjab, as per his elder brother Backer.
According to Backer, the mishap occurred the following evening when Alikhan, occupying the lower berth, was reportedly struck by the falling upper berth as the train passed through Telangana. Fellow passengers notified the Train Ticket Examiner (TTE), and Alikhan received initial medical attention at a local hospital in Warangal. Despite being moved to a hospital in Hyderabad the next day and undergoing a major surgery on Saturday, his condition deteriorated, leading to his demise on Monday.
Backer confirmed that Railway police have initiated an investigation into the incident based on Muhammed’s account. “We are relying on Muhammed’s version of events as we do not have firsthand information about what transpired on the train,” Backer stated.
