Justice Sanjiv Khanna To Be Sworn In As India’s 51st Chief Justice, Succeeding DY Chandrachud

Justice Sanjiv Khanna will officially take over as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday, administered by President Droupadi Murmu with the oath of office from Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10 am. Justice Khanna would replace Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who superannuated Sunday. He is likely to be in that top judicial position till mid-May 2025.

Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court in January 2019 and has already contributed toward several landmark judgments wherein he has been actively involved. These judgments form a beginning to his judicial legacy. Some of such judgments include validation orders pertaining to EVMs as well as the abolition of the electoral bonds scheme, both of which have become hallmarks in India’s democratic processes. He played a very critical role when the government revoked Article 370 and ended the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. He was also a part of the judgment handed out in the case of the interim bail given to former Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal.
