On Friday, JioStar formally debuted JioHotstar, a new streaming service created by combining JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. The platform will have the entire content library of both OTT services as well as more media from international studios and streaming networks. Users of JioStar have access to a free level as well. After the Viacom18 and Star India successful merger in November 2024, this launch follows the creation of the JioStar joint venture.
Jio Hotstar Officially Introduced
By press release JioStar said JioHotstar was being launched and listed its features. Including live sports broadcasts, the platform will offer about 300,000 hours of material.
The merger of both platforms is expected at launch to surpass 50 crore users. Still, it is not clear whether this number compensates for users subscribed to both JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar’s duplicates. Also included on JioHotstar is a fresh logo with the name of the platform along an off-kilter seven-pointed star.
Subscription Alternatives and Free Access
For the time being, JioHotstar will let users view free-of-charge content without having a subscription. Still, some material might be constrained behind a paywall. The joint venture made clear that paid subscriptions would be offered for those in search of an “uninterrupted and enhanced experience,” most likely signaling an ad-free experience and better streaming quality.
JioHotstar will naturally replace current JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar members. Upon initial login, these customers may establish their fresh memberships. New members can meanwhile check the available packages.
