Jammu And Kashmir Election Turnout Hits 35-Year High at 58.5%

The recently concluded elections in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a significant milestone, with the highest voter turnout in 35 years recorded at 58.5%. This surge in participation reflects a robust democratic spirit among the people of the region. The turnout in key parliamentary constituencies also saw remarkable increases, with Srinagar witnessing a rise to 38.5%, Anantnag-Rajouri to 54.9%, and Baramulla to 59.1%, compared to previous years. However, polling percentages in the Jammu region experienced a slight decline compared to 2019.

In Kashmir Valley, three parliamentary constituencies, namely Srinagar, Baramulla, and Anantnag-Rajouri, collectively recorded a turnout of 50.9%, marking the highest in three decades. The Election Commission (EC) attributed this turnout surge to the active participation of younger voters, particularly those in the 18-39 age group, who accounted for a significant portion of the electorate.

The EC highlighted its efforts to encourage voter participation, including organizing adventure sports, symposiums, awareness rallies, and cultural events across the region. Notable initiatives included setting up special polling stations for displaced Kashmiri migrants and unique activities like creating Igloos as dummy polling stations and organizing musical programs at various hotspots.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar expressed gratitude to the voters and noted the substantial increase in the number of contesting candidates since 2019. He emphasized the enhanced citizen involvement reflected in C-vigil complaints and Suvidha portal requests for rallies, indicating a shift towards fuller participation in the electoral process.

Overall, the high turnout in Jammu and Kashmir is a testament to the democratic engagement and civil spirit of its people, signaling a positive trend towards increased political participation and inclusivity in the region.
