External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that the shift in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump was “expected” and that several of his administration’s actions were “promising for India.” He noted that these changes align with India’s interests in many ways.
Move Towards Multipolarity
Speaking at an event hosted by Chatham House in collaboration with the Indian High Commission in the UK, Jaishankar highlighted how the evolving White House policies contribute to a multipolar world. “I think we see a President and an administration which, in our parlance, is moving towards multipolarity. And that is something which suits India,” he said.
Expected Policy Direction
Jaishankar explained that political leaders often follow through on long-standing agendas, even if they do not achieve everything they aim for. “Much of what we have seen and heard over the last few weeks was to be expected. So, I’m a little surprised that people are surprised,” he remarked while speaking with Chatham House Director Bronwen Maddox.
Discussion on India’s Role in Global Affairs
During the session, Jaishankar engaged in a meaningful discussion on India’s foreign policy, regional issues, and global economic challenges. He also provided updates on the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), emphasizing its significance in strengthening economic ties and fostering growth.
Pro-Khalistan Protesters Disrupt Event
As Jaishankar left the venue, pro-Khalistan protesters confronted him outside. In a viral video, a man ran towards his vehicle and tore the Indian national flag. The incident took place in front of London police officers, who did not intervene despite the vandalism. The security breach raised concerns about the safety of Indian officials abroad.
