Jagdeep Dhankhar Collapsed Mid-Event, Hospitalised Before Sudden Resignation: Report
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned on Tuesday, citing health reasons following several instances of discomfort in recent months. He resigned after a series of publicized health incidents — hospitalisation, collapses, and requiring support in public. President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation forthwith.
The Ministry of Home Affairs also issued the notification. PM Narendra Modi sent him his best wishes for good health, thanking him for his long service to the country. Dhankhar's abrupt departure has now raised concern and speculation within political circles.
VP Jagdeep Dhankhar fainted in June while participating in Kumaon University's Golden Jubilee function in Nainital, Uttarakhand. The episode, which took place in a hot, crowded room on an unusually warm day, sparked new worries about his health.
Officials present at the event declared he had briefly fainted. Although he was quickly fine, it wasn't the first public indication of his deteriorating health.
Earlier this March, Dhankhar was hospitalised in AIIMS in New Delhi. He complained of uneasiness and chest discomfort, and the hospitalisation followed. He was advised by doctors to restrict movement out of Delhi. This advice came only a few months before the incident at Nainital.
This month, Dhankhar was spotted needing support from his wife and an aide during a visit to Kerala. His frailty became more noticeable in public. Then, on July 17, during a visit to a facility developed by Delhi’s Lt Governor VK Saxena, Dhankhar felt unwell again. He paused, drank water, and took time to regain composure. These incidents confirmed growing concerns within his team and political circles.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar indicated he wishes to put healthcare first and heed medical advice. Though concerned about his health, he continued to be engaged in Parliament.
Onlookers remarked that he was still looking energetic as he presided over the Rajya Sabha, his constitutional role as Vice President.
President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation promptly. The Ministry of Home Affairs released a gazette notification. PM Modi expressed gratitude to Dhankhar's service in the public domain. "Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has had numerous opportunities to serve our nation in diverse roles, such as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health," the PM shared on X.
Dhankhar's move was unexpected, but warning signals were gathering. His recent brush with illness tallied up. His resignation might be sudden, but it shows a justified worry. Political leaders and citizens alike wish now for his complete recovery and good health.
