J-K Assembly Polls: 11.11% Voter Turnout Recorded by 9 AM in First Phase

The first phase of voting in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections reported a cumulative voter turnout of 11.11% by 9 AM on Wednesday, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Kishtwar led with a turnout of 14.83%, while Pulwama recorded 9.18%. Other areas showed varied participation, with Anantnag at 10.26%, Doda at 12.90%, Kulgam at 10.77%, Ramban at 11.91%, and Shopian at 11.44%.

District Election Officer for Doda, Harvinder Singh, remarked on the enthusiasm among voters, stating, “Voting has started at polling stations. We are witnessing a lot of excitement from the public. I hope we achieve a high voter turnout this time. A very good polling exercise is taking place in a free and fair manner. Those who are at home should come out and exercise their voting rights.”

Deputy Commissioner of Kulgam, Athar Aamir, noted long queues at several polling stations, reporting that elections are proceeding smoothly. “Voting is happening at all 372 polling stations. Mock polls were completed by 7 AM at 100% of these stations. We are monitoring polling through webcasting and have made all necessary arrangements. We expect a very good voter turnout,” he said.

Polling for the first phase began at 7 AM under tight security, with voting set to conclude at 6 PM. A long line of voters was observed at polling stations throughout the morning. This phase covers 24 assembly constituencies, including 16 in the Kashmir region and 8 in Jammu.

BJP leader Altaf Thakur expressed confidence in the democratic process, saying, “People are eager to have their voices heard through this election. Voters have been lining up since 6 AM. Jammu and Kashmir has transformed; people have rejected terrorism and separatism, choosing to express themselves through the ballot. Since 2019, there is pride in Indian democracy, and today’s turnout reflects that commitment.”

Jammu & Kashmir JD(U) president GM Shaheen predicted record voter turnout, stating, “This election will break records. It represents a stand against dynasty politics in Jammu and Kashmir. People are excited and ready for change; this election is for a good government.”

Voting for the second and third phases in Jammu and Kashmir is scheduled for September 25 and October 1, respectively, with vote counting set for October 8.
