The Indian stock market will remain closed on October 22nd on the occasion of Balipratipada. The markets will open for their first trade of the Hindu financial calendar on Thursday.

The Indian stock market was closed on Tuesday, October 21, to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Diwali. On the day, markets only opened for a one-hour Muhurat trading session between 1:45 PM and 2:45 PM to mark the beginning of the new Samvat year (Samvat 2082). In addition to Diwali, the Indian stock market will also be closed on October 22.

Is the Stock Market Open Today?

The Indian stock market will remain closed on October 22, 2025, on the occasion of Balipratipada. This marks the second consecutive day that the markets remain closed following the Diwali off.

Balipratipada, also known as Govardhan Puja, is an Indian festival celebrated the day after Diwali. The festival is celebrated to honour King Bali and his devotion, generosity and righteous nature. The day also marks the beginning of the new year according to the Vikram Samvat calendar in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.

Stock Market Performance on Diwali Muhurat Trading Window

On Tuesday, October 21, the Indian stock market opened for a one-hour window as the annual Muhurat trading window on Diwali. The official muhurat timing was from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM, during which the markets observed average trade volumes, marking the beginning of the Hindu financial calendar.

BSE Sensex ended 62.97 points, or 0.07%, higher at 84,426.34, while the NSE Nifty 50 settled 25.45 points, or 0.10%, higher at 25,868.60. Bank Nifty index 26.00 points, or 0.04%, lower at 58,007.20.

Gold and Silver prices also observed a minor drop. After the Muhurat trade session, the MCX gold rate dropped by ₹271 (0.21%) to ₹1,28,000 per 10 grams. Similarly, Silver prices also observed a drop of ₹327 (0.22%), closing at ₹1,50,000 per kg.

When will the Stock Market Open After Diwali?

BSE and NSE trading, including equities, derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing, will be available to Indian traders starting Thursday, October 23rd. Indian investors are eager for the post-Diwali market with the beginning of the new Hindu financial calendar.
