While India is celebrating one of its largest festivals today, Indian share markets are preparing to start Diwali-special 'Muhurat trading.' Though Diwali is being observed on Monday, October 20, in the majority of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange will be open.
The stock market is open today for normal trading and will be closed tomorrow, October 21, to mark Diwali. There will be a one‑hour special "Muhurat trading" on Tuesday, October 21, instead of the regular full trading. The BSE and the NSE have 14 official holidays in 2025 for the stock market, including Diwali on Tuesday, October 21. There will be a whole market holiday on October 22.
The Muhurat trading session is an auspicious beginning to the Hindu New Year and one of the most eagerly awaited stock market events of the year.
Date: Tuesday, October 21
Time: 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm (pre-open from 1:30 pm)
Exchanges: NSE, BSE, and other market segments
Investors make token buy and sell orders in this one-hour symbolic window of trading to signify prosperity and good luck in the coming year.
Last year, the Muhurat special trading session was conducted between 6 pm and 7 pm.
It is felt that trading during the 'Muhurat,' or lucky hour, generates wealth and financial prosperity for the stakeholders.
In the past, the Muhurat trading session has usually been seen with positive sentiment and low trading volumes, while the Sensex and Nifty tend to close higher.
Market analysts point out that Diwali is a propitious moment to initiate new business, and most investors are convinced that participation in the Muhurat trading session leads to success during the year.
Since the trading window is restricted to a single hour, the markets usually experience increased volatility. Analysts point out that the value of the session is more symbolic than profitable in the short term.
Muhurat Trading is a special, symbolic trading session held by the Indian stock exchanges (the Bombay Stock Exchange—BSE and the National Stock Exchange—NSE) on the auspicious occasion of Diwali every year.
