Iran-Israel tension: Jaishankar dialogues with Iran FM on 17 Indian crew members’ release

The day after Iran seized the MSC Aries cargo ship, which had 17 Indian nationals aboard due to its ties with Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the issue with his Iranian counterpart H. Amirabdollahian on Sunday.

EAM S. Jaishankar highlighted their discussion on releasing the Indian crew members and assessing the current regional situation. He shared on X, “Took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries. Discussed the current situation in the region. Stressed the importance of avoiding escalation, exercising restraint and returning to diplomacy. Agreed to remain in touch.” Following the seizure, India swiftly engaged with Iranian authorities to secure the release of the Indian nationals.

“We are aware that a cargo ship ‘MSC Aries’ has been taken control of by Iran. We have learnt that there are 17 Indian nationals onboard. We are in touch with the Iranian authorities through diplomatic channels, both in Tehran and in Delhi, to ensure the security, welfare and early release of Indian nationals,” ANI reported citing sources.

The ship, known as the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, was directed towards Tehran’s territorial waters, as per ANI quoting Iranian state media.

In light of Iran’s attack on Israel, New Delhi called for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict. India, alongside the US, UK, and France, urged restraint, a return to diplomacy, and emphasized the importance of maintaining security and stability in the region. The ministry stated on Sunday, “We call for immediate de-escalation, exercise of restraint, stepping back from violence and return to the path of diplomacy. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation… It is vital that security and stability are maintained in the region.”
