A couple has alleged that a restaurant in Delhi’s Pitampura denied them entry for wearing Indian clothes. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta has launched an official probe into the August 3 event, which has generated intense internet criticism. A couple alleges they were discriminated against for wearing a kurta-salwar.

The event happened at a restaurant called "Tubata," which is located on the Pitampura metro property. A man is shown expressing his rage in a now-viral video. The video is viral on social media after he and his partner were allegedly denied entry to the eatery because of their ethnic attire.

"Inhone kum kapde pehenne walo ko jaane diya ye bolke ki aapke ethnic dress ko hum allow nahi karenge," the man says in the video.

“Indian culture ki beizzati ki hai aur ek aurat ki beizzati ki hai,” he further adds.

According to him, others wearing shorts and western outfits were allowed inside, but he and his partner were stopped due to their choice of traditional Indian attire.

Chief Minister Takes Serious Note, Orders Action

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta reacted strongly to the video. She instructed officials to investigate the issue without delay.

"A video of a ban on Indian dress at a restaurant in Peetampura has come to light. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has taken a serious note of it. The officers have been directed to launch an investigation and take urgent action (in the matter)," Delhi tourism and culture minister Kapil Mishra said in a post on X.

Mishra further stated, “This is 'unacceptable' in Delhi,” sharing the video that had sparked outrage.

Restaurant’s Alleged Policy Sparks Outrage

Additionally, the couple said that when they objected, the restaurant employees mistreated them. The incident gained traction online, with several users slamming the restaurant for what they called a discriminatory policy.

Kapil Mishra later said that the restaurant reportedly had an internal rule against Indian clothing, which led to the incident. He confirmed that following CM Rekha Gupta’s direction, both the district magistrate and a municipal officer met with the restaurant owner.

Restaurant Owner Drops Controversial Policy

Following the meeting with government officials, the restaurant owner confirmed that such a policy will no longer be followed. While no official statement has been released by the restaurant, the authorities have assured that action will be taken if any violations are found.

Kapil Mishra assured the public that the matter would not be taken lightly. He promised strict action if any wrongdoing were proven. "The restaurant reportedly had a policy of not allowing people in Indian attire. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta took cognisance of the video and directed me to inquire into the matter," he reiterated.

Cultural Sensitivity Under Spotlight

Concerns over respect for Indian customs in public places and cultural discrimination have been raised by the occurrence. Delhi residents, public personalities, and social media users have praised the government for its prompt action and denounced the restaurant's purported position.

The goal of the study is still to prevent such activities from happening again in the city.
