A major road accident shook Indore’s Shikshak Nagar area on Monday evening when a speeding truck rammed into a crowd on Airport Road. At least two people were feared dead, and six others sustained injuries.
The accident also caused a fire after a motorcycle got trapped under the truck and caught flames. The fire soon spread to the truck, creating panic among locals. Videos of the incident quickly went viral on social media.
Additional commissioner of police Amit Singh confirmed that two people lost their lives in the accident. Their identities have not yet been revealed.
“A truck coming in at speed hit a bike first and later others. The truck driver has been arrested and he is being interrogated by the police,” ACP Singh told Hindustan Times.
Eyewitnesses at the spot said the death toll could rise further as many injured were in critical condition.
Locals described the terrifying moments after the truck lost control.
“The truck driver was driving recklessly. The truck’s tyres caught fire, and people began falling as it plowed into the vehicles. My brother-in-law’s legs were severed. He was rushed to Geetanjali Hospital,” said Subhsha Soni, a local resident.
The injured were quickly taken to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment. Police and district officials rushed to the scene to manage the situation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone-1 Krishna Lalchandani revealed that the driver was heavily drunk at the time of the accident.
“The truck driver is in police custody and has been sent for medical examination. He was in a highly inebriated state and lost control of the vehicle, which led to this accident,” the DCP told ANI.
Police have launched an investigation into the case. The driver faces charges of reckless driving and endangering lives.
