Indigo CEO Pieter Elbers participated in the once-in-a-lifetime Mahakumbh Mela at Prayagraj this weekend, which was attended by millions of devotees and saints in the world’s largest religious congregation. Mahakumbh 2025 is significant because it happened after 144 years under a rare and auspicious astrological alignment.

For the devotees who attend the assembly, the current gathering is exceptional because the last one of its like was held in 1881. In a moving LinkedIn post, Elbers offered his thoughts on the event, detailing the size of the festival and the atmosphere that pervaded it.

“Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Once in 144 years.the largest gathering of mankind on planet Earth! ” Elbers wrote. With an astonishing 45 crore visitors in just 45 days, the event is larger than the population of the United States, making it a monumental occasion for both India and the world.

“45 Crores.450 million visitors in only 45 days. The sheer scale is impossible to grasp. Similar to Europe’s population and more than the USA,” he added.

The Unmatched Scale of Mahakumbh Mela

Elbers visited the Mahakumbh on January 26, 2025, during the Republic Day weekend. He explained that no words, pictures, or full understanding could fully express the event’s greatness.

“No word, sentence, or picture can properly describe this place or the energy,” he said, emphasizing the magnitude of the gathering and the deep spirituality that envelops the scene.

This place Mahakumbh Mela occurs every 12 years when all three rivers- Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystic Saraswati- join in one spot and millions of Hindus come here for a holy dip into the holy water which they consider to be purified of all malice of human soul. In this festival it is not just a religious activity but India shows its own diverse culture.

Elbers Shared Spiritual Experience in the Sangam In his post, the Indigo CEO recounted his deeply personal experience of taking a “holy dip” in the Sangam, the sacred confluence of the three rivers, at 5 a.m. He joined over a million people in the holy waters, surrounded by chants, prayers, and devotion.

Despite the vast crowd, Elbers described a moment of profound peace amidst the chaos. “I took the holy early morning dip at 5 am in the sacred confluence of rivers, the holy Sangam with about a million at the same time, surrounded by chants, prayers, devotion, and the unity of humanity.

Found an inexplicable moment of peace in the chaos,” Elbers wrote.

He described the experience as humbling and spiritual, a reminder of the significance of the Mahakumbh Mela not only for Hindus but for the world. “Humbled and grateful to be a part of something so divine, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will cherish forever,” he added.

Acknowledging the Team at Prayagraj Airport

Elbers also took time to appreciate the efforts of the Indigo team at Prayagraj airport. He thanked them for their stellar work with which they ensured seamless operations amidst what has been a humongous addition of visitors during the festival.
