India’s Human Spaceflight Dreams Are Taking Shape: ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a significant milestone in the Gaganyaan Programme with the transfer of the first solid motor segment from the production plant to the launch complex.

Highlighting this progress, the space agency stated, “India’s human spaceflight dreams are taking shape!”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), ISRO added, “A significant milestone for the Gaganyaan Programme! The first solid motor segment has been moved from the production plant to the launch complex, marking a key step towards the HLVM3 G1 flight.”

In September, ISRO Chairman S. Somanath shared updates on the ambitious programme, saying, “Gaganyaan is ready for launch; we are trying to launch it by the end of this year.” The Gaganyaan Programme, approved in December 2018, aims to send humans to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and establish the foundation for India’s long-term human space exploration efforts.

In addition to Gaganyaan, the Cabinet on 18 September approved the Chandrayaan-4 mission. This lunar mission will focus on developing and demonstrating technologies for returning to Earth after a successful Moon landing and analysing Moon samples on Earth. The Chandrayaan-4 mission will lay the groundwork for critical technologies like docking, undocking, landing, safe return, and lunar sample analysis, supporting India’s goal of a Moon landing by 2040.

The Indian government has set a bold vision for the nation’s space programme during the Amrit Kaal. This includes the establishment of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (Indian Space Station) by 2035 and achieving an Indian lunar landing by 2040.
