The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a petition on Tuesday submitted by influencer Ranveer Allahbadia, requesting the consolidation of several FIRs filed against him concerning purported obscene comments made on comedian Samay Raina’s YouTube program, India’s Got Latent. A panel of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh will oversee the proceedings.
Last Friday, Abhinav Chandrachud, the child of former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, called for an urgent session regarding the matter. Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna confirmed that the issue would be assigned to a panel and discussed within two to three days.
Key Updates on the Ranveer Allahbadia Controversy
1. YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, known widely as ‘BeerBiceps,’ has apparently been unresponsive to investigative authorities, according to a joint announcement from the Mumbai and Guwahati Police.
2. Officials assert that Allahbadia has not yet replied to FIRs lodged by the Maharashtra Cyber Department, Guwahati Police, and Jaipur Police concerning the India’s Got Latent incident.
3. The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has issued a notice requiring Allahbadia to appear before them on February 24. In the meantime, comedian Samay Raina has been requested to present himself before the Cyber Cell on February 18.
4. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has summoned Allahbadia, Raina, and other individuals involved in the controversy to appear at its office in New Delhi on Monday. The Commission remarked that it has noted with concern the vulgar and offensive comments made by content creators Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina, Apoorva Makhija, Jaspreet Singh, and Ashish Chanchlani, as well as producers Tushar Poojari and Saurabh Bothra.
5. Many of those summoned did not attend, citing concerns for personal safety, prior international engagements, and logistical difficulties. Allahbadia communicated to the Commission that he had received death threats and requested a new hearing date. NCW approved his request and rescheduled the hearing for March 6.
6. Jaspreet Singh, who is currently abroad in Paris, informed the NCW that he would return to India by March 10, 2025, and would participate in the investigation. His hearing has been postponed to March 11.
7. Samay Raina, presently in the US for a previously arranged tour, assured the Commission that he would be available upon his return. NCW acknowledged his request and scheduled his hearing for March 11.
8. In response to the controversy, Raina publicly expressed regret, stating, “Everything that has been happening has been too much for me to handle. I have removed all India’s Got Latent videos from my channel. My only objective was to make people laugh and have a good time. I will fully cooperate with all agencies to ensure their inquiries are concluded fairly. Thank you. ”
9. A formal complaint has been lodged with the Mumbai Commissioner and the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, alleging that the show featured offensive language and inappropriate comments regarding women to attract viewers and monetary gain.
10. The controversy arises from Allahbadia’s remarks on India’s Got Latent about “parents and sex. ” In light of the backlash, the show has been removed from YouTube.
