India’s First Glass Bridge Opens in Tamil Nadu: A Scenic Marvel Connecting Iconic Monuments

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated India’s first-ever glass bridge in Kanyakumari on December 30, 2024. The Rs 37-crore project connects two of the region’s most renowned landmarks: the Vivekananda Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue.

A Stunning Visual Experience

The 77-metre-long, 10-metre-wide bridge is designed to provide visitors with an unparalleled experience, offering a transparent glass surface that gives breathtaking views of the sea below. The Chief Minister shared a video of the bowstring-shaped bridge on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, showcasing its intricate design and panoramic surroundings. During the inauguration, Stalin also took a walk across the bridge, further highlighting its unique features.

A Landmark Project for Kanyakumari

The bridge project, undertaken by the Tamil Nadu government, coincided with the silver jubilee of the Thiruvalluvar statue’s unveiling by former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

The bridge not only enhances the visual appeal of the area but also provides a more accessible and scenic route between the two iconic monuments. Visitors can now walk leisurely between the Vivekananda Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue, replacing the previous ferry service. This also shortens travel time and offers an enjoyable alternative.

Durable and Resilient Design

Built to withstand the region’s harsh marine environment, the glass bridge features a bowstring arch design that is both visually striking and structurally durable. It is specifically engineered to resist the corrosive effects of salty sea air and high humidity, ensuring it remains a long-lasting feature in Kanyakumari.
