India’s eastern coastline is on high alert as a brewing weather system in the Bay of Bengal is rapidly intensifying into Cyclone Montha. According to the IMD, the cyclone is likely to turn into a severe cyclonic storm and could be dangerous for coastal regions. Authorities are keeping a close eye on its path as it moves toward Andhra Pradesh.

Where and When Will the Cyclone Strike?

The crucial question for residents is where and when the storm will make landfall. The IMD has pinpointed the expected location. The system is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, with the city of Kakinada directly in its path. The anticipated time for this major weather event is during the evening or night of Sunday, October 28. As it approaches, the storm is predicted to pack powerful winds with speeds reaching 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

What is the Expected Path of Intensification?

How did this storm develop, and how strong will it become? The system began as a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD’s detailed bulletin, it is following a clear path of intensification. It is expected to develop into a deep depression by October 26, then strengthen into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 27. Finally, it is forecast to become a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28, just hours before it makes landfall.

Which Areas Will Be Most Affected?

The storm is expected to bring serious disruption, with very heavy rainfall in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha. Authorities and residents should prepare for flooding, high winds, and damage to infrastructure. The precise location of the heaviest rain will be known once the storm gets closer to the coast.

Is There Another Weather System to Watch?

Yes, the Indian subcontinent is currently monitoring two significant weather systems. While Cyclone Montha develops in the Bay of Bengal, a separate depression is active over the Eastcentral Arabian Sea. This system is moving in a north-northwesterly direction and is likely to cause heavy rainfall along the western coast. Regions including Goa, Konkan, Gujarat, and Kerala are expected to receive significant rain from this separate weather event.
