The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully conducted flight trials of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile (NASM-SR) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur on February 25, according to the Ministry of Defence.
Watch the trial below:
During the trials, the missile was launched from an Indian Naval Seaking Helicopter and effectively demonstrated its capability against ship targets. The test validated the missile’s Man-in-Loop feature, as it achieved a direct hit on a small ship target using a sea-skimming trajectory at its maximum range. The missile is equipped with an indigenous Imaging Infra-Red Seeker for terminal guidance, and the trial also showcased a high-bandwidth two-way datalink, allowing real-time seeker images to be transmitted to the pilot for in-flight retargeting.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, and the industry partners for the successful test. He highlighted that the Man-in-Loop capability is a unique feature that enables in-flight retargeting.
The missile was launched in Bearing-only Lock-on after launch mode, where multiple targets were present in close proximity. Initially, it locked onto a large target within a designated search zone. However, during the terminal phase, the pilot selected a smaller, concealed target, ensuring precise impact.
The NASM-SR utilizes an indigenous Fiber Optic Gyroscope-based Inertial Navigation System (INS) and a Radio Altimeter for mid-course guidance. Its design includes an integrated avionics module, Electro-Mechanical actuators for aerodynamic and jet vane control, thermal batteries, and a PCB warhead. The propulsion system consists of a solid-fuel engine with an inline ejectable booster and a long-burn sustainer. The trials successfully met all mission objectives.
The missile has been developed by various DRDO laboratories, including the Research Centre Imarat, Defence Research and Development Laboratory, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory. Production is currently being carried out in collaboration with Development cum Production Partners, MSMEs, start-ups, and other industry stakeholders.
Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also extended his congratulations to the DRDO team, users, and industry partners for the achievement.
